Here's a page where I won't shut up about some of the games I'm playing.
I mainly enjoy RPG's and FPS's from the early 2000's up to the current day, but I tend to play whatever - barring Real Time Strategy games, just not a fan! I do like cRPG's a good amount, but I haven't played enough to confidently say that without being a poser. Immersive Sim's are also great!
You can assume that anything I put here has my seal of approval. I might have things I dislike about these games - maybe the barrier to entry's difficult, maybe it's an older title that's harder to get up-and-running, maybe it's a mix of things. Whatever the reason though, they're great titles worth your time!
I might make reviews / talk about my experiences playing a few games in the near future - I'm a very stream-of-consiousness kind of typer, so we'll see how that'll turn out!
Might put some playthroughs of games, or talk about some of the more obscure ones I play, so on and so forth.
eMUSH
eMUSH is a continuation of the flash MMO MUSH: The Dawn. The original was made by Twinoid (apart of Motion Twin, the same company behind Dead Cells!) and has long since been abandoned with the death of Flash.
It's a 16-player whodunnit with two sides - Humans, and Mush. Only one single person is consistently human - Chun - with two of the remaining crew being chosen at the start of the ship to be the titular Mush. It's important to note that this game takes place over the course of several days, possibly weeks, potentially even about a month of real time!
It is, hands down, the most unique multiplayer game I've ever had the chance to play. I've got faint memories of trying it when I was pretty young, but I didn't get into it for obvious "I-take-several-days-to-play" reasons. Everybody plays a unique character with an assigned name / role, and every character gets a few traits that are unique to them. You cannot metagame if you've encountered a player you've played with before until the end of the game. You need to play your role, and you cannot trust anyone.
The reason an end-state cannot be achieved in a few hours is because the entire game is based around an action-economy. Nearly every single action (barring talking) requires some type of energy to be expended - either action or movement. Some characters have perks that let them use less energy on certain task, others not so much (EG. Chao cannot sleep to gain action points, but he recovers movement points twice as fast. Terrence is paralyzed from the waist-down and struggles to convert action points to movement points, but can freely enter/leave a room if a crewmember is in it.) It takes THREE hours to regain AP/MP, and getting more outside of sleeping in one of the limited and heavily-monitored dormitory beds is VERY limited.
Many actions get you dirty - and most actions the MUSH preform makes them dirty. The only showers are in the aforementioned dorms, so the simple act of sleeping may insinuate that you're not human. There's alot of social-play, alot of lying, alot of white-lies, alot of tallying, and alot of murder. Sometimes, the Mush need to lay low because the Humans are being too effective, letting the ship fall apart due to escalating calamities and striking when enemy ships are firing on the crew, and unfortunately the kitchen's on fire - other times, Chao/Hogan rearranges the Fung-Suei of several Crewmember's ribcages. Yes, there are two security roles. Yes, the ship is guaranteed to get one of them. Yes, only psychopaths play Derek/Chao.
Highly recommend this one. It's a blessing that the team behind eMUSH took a few years to bring this thing back to life. It's NOT for everyone, infact I've taken about a half-a-year break from it, but I do intend to return to it at some point in the near future. I can't seem to introduce anyone to this damn thing, since it's kind of a brick-wall for a learning curve, especially since a good chunk of the playerbase is already experienced, but please give it a chance if it at-all seems interesting to you. It's worth the effort!
Minecraft^2 is the best way I can describe this game. Everything you do is behind a mechanic.
It started out as a minecraft mod, but turned into it's own game. It's a HUGE timesink, but everything you do doesn't feel like a grind - crops take time to grow, and you need to account for nutrients in the soil. Ore veins set you up for a long time, but finding a good vein requires a journey. Some resources are so important you need to venture into different climates thousands of blocks away, meaning you need to build a boat and get supplies. Smithing is it's own voxel-based minigame, which takes a ton of time and setup, but nets you with equipment that lasts a long, long time.
Beyond this, the lore's post-apocalyptic, and eldritch. I can't get into it much, as I don't know much of it.
I love this game to bits. The soundtrack is phenomenal, too - it's such a cozy game, if you ignore the cavediving, and the planes of existence sometimes mashing together to bring terrors unknown into the realm.
There's a built-in handbook to teach you the game, if you decide to ignore the wiki, or any guides you come across (which, you shouldn't!) Used to play this game in multiplayer, feels right having a few people specialize in certain aspects. Splitting the effort means splitting the time, it's nice not having to worry about winter freezing the crops when my buddy's already found and stored a ton of meat and berries in the cellar. Modding scene's really good, too - a ton of mods feel like they were always in the game (in a good way.)
What an amazing game. It feels generational, once-in-a-lifetime, unreplicable, and most importantly - timeless. I don't think I could ever get bored of this game, so long as I pace myself and return to it every so often. It's sublime!
QUOTES FROM THE GAME! The main menu has a bunch of inspirational quotes, they really add to the vibe of it all. Have to include em!
THIEF: THE DARK PROJECT
WIP! I'll get to this when I can! For now, just know that Thief I & II are absolutely, positively timeless. The gameplay holds up immaculately, and the way the sound effects are used influence me a great deal. Sound as a mechanic?! Obscene!
DEADLOCK
WIP! I'll get to this when I can! God, there's so much to talk about here. Hell, the game isn't even OUT yet! This game infuriates me. This game makes me feel great. It's an ouroborous of hate and I love it.
DROD || DEADLY ROOMS OF DEATH
WIP! I'll get to this when I can! DROD is a NAIL-BITINGLY HARD/ANNOYING! SERIES But, it's got a long history, and it's one of the more unique puzzle-games I've played.
WIP! I'll get to this when I can! Underrail is a NAIL-BITINGLY HARD/ANNOYING CRPG. It is Save/Reload Simulator 2553. It's a huge timesink, but one of my favorite games I've ever played - the lore, the gameplay, the quests, they're all fantastic. There's also an expansion-turned-sequel coming out at some point in the future!
DUNGEONS OF DREDMOR
WIP! I'll get to this when I can! Dungeons of Dredmor is a deceivingly simple roguelike with pretty fun combat and buildcrafting!. I feel the need to put this here, now, as even years after the development studio closed - The Developers came back. A new DLC is in the works.
JABRONI BRAWL
WIP! I'll get to this when I can! The ultimate party game.
DEUS EX - THE NAMELESS MOD
WIP! I'll get to this when I can! A mod for the game Deus Ex, nearly twenty years old, and steeped in ancient planet/forum culture - things that no longer roam the plains.
IT'S STILL GETTING FIXES. It's just more Deus Ex. You don't need to understand the esoterica (I don't!) to enjoy it. It's worth the time and effort!
UPCOMING GAMES
Here's a few upcoming games I'm interested in.
Collect Call. From the developers of 1-900-CULT (the latter, a Hotline-Miami Total Conversion, is unfortunately on indefinite hiatus due to funding. Instead, they're working on a different game - Collect Call!)
The Third Shift. A horror game, stylized after the original Gameboy. Been waiting for this one for years. Psycho Patrol R. A mecha EUROPOL Im-sim. While it's out in Early Access, it's still not done!
AMYGDALA: Prelude. An explorative FPS, reminiscent of Resident Evil, made in the Source engine. VERY interested in this one!
Sulphur Memories: Alchemist. An alchemy roguelike, made in the same engine as ToME4. VERY interested in this one - it's in Early Access, but updates are slow-going.
Project Silverfish An explorative FPS/Sandbox Immersive Sim, a S.T.A.L.K.E.R.-like. It's in Early Access, and VERY worth the price! CM-SS13 A massive aliens-inspired PVP Roleplaying Game built in a dogshit engine - now on Steam! One of the least-worst ways to get into SS13.
